Fire PreventionA good fire prevention program consists of prevention, preparedness, response and recovery. We address these areas through inspection, code enforcement, public fire and life safety education, and occupant services. It is our goal to be proactive when protecting the lives and property of the people we serve. Although the Department employs a very wide range of prevention strategies to accomplish our mission, we continue to look for new and innovative ways to educate and protect the community. Code enforcement and inspection programs are vital to maintain a high level of fire safety within the community. The goals of these programs are to reduce the likelihood of fire emergencies, prevent the loss of property and personal injury, contribute to the safety of citizens, and to control the cost of fire suppression and other emergency responses. Public EducationFire Department personnel direct their attention to developing and delivering fire safety education to the community by means of prepared classes and demonstrations. A wide variety of age groups are instructed in the areas of fire prevention, general life safety, fire extinguisher use, evacuation, and safety planning for local businesses. In the past three years the Willoughby Fire Department was selected through a competitive grant process to receive various Fire Prevention Grants. These grants will enable the department to augment its existing programs from primary-age school children through senior citizens. Programs AvailableFree Smoke Detector Program – In an effort to prevent fire-related deaths and reduce property loss, the Willoughby Fire Department has been offering free smoke detectors and replacement batteries for residents of the city for over fifteen years. Detectors and batteries are purchased through donations, mainly from the Willoughby Kiwanis Club and Miester Media. We thank them for the support they have given to this program and the Department. Point of Sale Inspections – In 1992 the City of Willoughby enacted legislation requiring all new one-, two-, and three-family residences to be equipped with smoke detectors. In addition, all existing residences are required to have smoke detectors as a point of sale requirement or when major remodeling/alterations are completed. The primary reason for requiring smoke detectors is to reduce fire deaths and to promote fire safety. Child Car Safety Seat ProgramThe goal of the Child Car Safety Seat Program is to educate parents, grandparents and adults on how to select and install the right safety seat for their child. Fire Department technicians also explain the importance of seatbelt safety and make sure child safety seats have not been recalled. Fire and Life Safety ProgramsThe programs listed below are provided to residents and local businesses at various times throughout the year. Fire Department personnel are used to present this wide variety of educational and awareness programs.
