Chief Straube’s Bulletin
Words from Chief StraubeWhat is Social Media? Social media is the integrated technology that allows users to generate their own content and then share that content through various connections. Today’s social media buzz words are Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, YouTube, Blogs, and Wikis. The benefits of social media are its immediacy, its interaction, and its audience. As of February 2011, the Willoughby Police Department can now be found on Facebook and Twitter. A consistent goal of mine for the past 18 years has been for our Department to be a leader in the county with our service, professionalism, and technology. With social media, we can accomplish all three and much more. Facebook and Twitter can allow us to develop a dialogue with the community we serve, provide immediate information on relevant occurrences within the City, and provide citizens another way to communicate and interact with their police department. As many of you know, Facebook allows its users the ability to create profiles, send messages, search for other users, create networks of friends and fans, post images and videos, and share content. As police officers, it’s our job to find new and innovative ways to solve crimes and serve the community. With Facebook, we can now broadcast relevant information and occurrences within the City, create a network of fans of our police department, post images and videos of suspects, wanted criminals, and events, accept positive messages, criticisms, tips, and other valuable information, and share content with the community. Twitter is useful for a broad range of police and public safety communications, such as immediate alerts of traffic, fire or other potential hazards, crime prevention information, daily felony arrest reports, photos of wanted suspects, community event information, response to citizen inquiries and social interaction. It allows us to send out immediate updates to large groups of people anytime and anywhere. As with any project, we are in the infancy stage. We hope you check out our Facebook page by clicking on the link at the top of this page and our Twitter account at www.twitter.com/WilloughbyPD. As time goes on, we look forward to building on what we created. Our goal with social media is to help us to get to know the community better and for the community to get to know its police department better. |
