The foundation of every community is the quality of its infrastructure. The Willoughby Service Department maintains nearly 90 miles of storm sewer lines and 91 miles of sanitary sewer lines and a sewage treatment plant which processes an average influent flow of 7 million gallons a day. More than 86 center lane miles of asphalt and concrete roads are maintained and 44 signalized intersections carefully synchronized. Without proper infrastructure maintenance, emergency medical personnel would have difficulty arriving quickly to help the needy; safety forces could experience response delays; travel would be hindered for motorists . . . the list could be endless.
Aside from maintaining roads, storm sewers and sanitary sewers, the Service Department maintains more than 150 pieces of city equipment ranging from snow plows to emergency medical vehicles, coordinates and oversees the weekly solid waste collection, maintains two cemeteries, numerous city buildings, coordinates the annual leaf collection, assists in street tree maintenance of more than 20,000 trees, is involved in many city aesthetic enhancement programs and routinely performs street sweeping.
