Community Involvement Officer
Our Community Involvement Officer performs a wide variety of functions ranging from presentations for area businesses to safety programs for youth in the community. The goal of community involvement is to build partnerships in the community fostering crime prevention and safety.

Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.)
Officers from the Willoughby Police Department teach the DARE program to each fifth grade class in the public schools within the City of Willoughby. For 9 weeks or more the officers teach the students how to resist drugs and violence, how to build self-esteem, the consequences of choices they make and all the actions they take as well as the 8 ways to say no, how to avoid peer pressure and how to deal with stress. In the 2009-2010 school year, Officers Kerzisnik, Huth, and Jordan taught 9 classes totaling approximately 250 students.

Law Enforcement Explorer Post 602
For 30 years the Willoughby Police Department has sponsored a Law Enforcement Exploring Post which operates under the policies and guidelines of the “Learning For Life” division of the “Boy Scouts of America” and the Willoughby Police Department.
The program is for students and young adults in school / college, ages 14-21 and provides career education and experiences in addition to leadership and life skills. The Explorers meet on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month at WPD, as well as participate in community events. Post 602 accepts membership applications throughout the year. Safety Town
Safety Town is a safety awareness program designed to teach children about to enter kindergarten how to respond to dangerous situations. Certified civilian instructors and police officers offer safety lessons with regard to traffic, strangers, fire, and bicycle riding, while volunteers and teen instructors provide much needed assistance with check-ins and guidance.
Registration for this one week class is held in April and is open to residents of Willoughby, Willoughby Hills, and Kirtland. Our Parks and Recreation Department coordinates registration.
