Groundbreaking Ceremony Planned for the Osborne Park Shoreline Protection Project

Willoughby, Ohio — September 17, 2024 — The City of Willoughby announces the ceremonial groundbreaking and project kick-off for the Osborne Park Shoreline Protection Project, the critical first phase of Willoughby’s reimagination of Osborne Park.

This project, supported by the significant $2 million state grant secured through the efforts of Ohio State Senator Jerry Cirino and supported by State Representative Dan Troy marks the beginning of this transformational project aimed at preserving Willoughby’s shoreline.

For years, high water levels have eroded much of the 1,400 linear foot shoreline along Lake Erie, resulting in loss of parkland, threatening underground infrastructure and limiting the recreational opportunities for residents and visitors. This first phase includes slope stabilization, erosion control measures to prevent further degradation and the restoration of native habitat. Additionally, phase one will include the creation of a cobble beach, a sand beach and a jetty.

“We are incredibly grateful to Senator Cirino for his unwavering support in securing funds to help make this project become a reality,” said Mayor Bob Fiala. “The Osborne Park shoreline is not only a key part of our community’s recreational life, but it’s also vital to maintaining the natural landscape and ecosystem along Lake Erie.”

Refreshing Osborne Park is important for the residents. Several community meetings have been held since initial planning for the shoreline and park uplands began in 2021 to share ideas and gather feedback. This initiative to protect and restore the shoreline and create new recreational amenities through a multi-phase approach has been supported by the public.

The Smith Group, a design consultant with a national reputation for coastal engineering, was retained in 2021 for this project. Design and engineering are complete, and the permitting is expected to be finalized by the end of 2024.

The City of Willoughby invites community members and local leaders to attend the groundbreaking ceremony on September 24, 2024, at 2 pm at Osborne Park to celebrate the launch of this important environmental preservation project.
